Come Ride With Us
What Do I Need?
All that's required to do distance riding is a horse, a rider, and a love of riding! No special equipment or type of horse is needed. Just condition your horse using the tack you and he are comfortable with.
What Do I Do?
- Contact ride management about a ride you've seen advertised or call the SLR secretary to find out about up coming rides. They'll send you ride information and the "New Riders" handout.
- Read your "New Riders" handout. It will give you lots of information on what to bring, how a vet check works, trail etiquette, etc.
- You can arrive the morning of a ride, but camping out the night before is a great way to meet other riders.
- There is a ride meeting at which trail is reviewed and camp rules are explained.
- Your horse will be checked by a vet before the ride to make sure he is 'good to go'.
- You follow marked trails, usually setting your own pace.
- At planned rest stops and at the end of the ride your horse will again be checked by a vet. Their job is to make sure you and the horse are having a safe ride.
- If at any time you are confused, ask questions. You'll find most people happy to help you in any way they can.
- After the ride it's time to relax, bring your camp chair to the ride office, and trade trail stories with other riders over a meal (potluck or supplied).
- Receive your completion certificate for a job well done.
